And how beautifully -- these simple B&W portraits, coupled with anecdotes that are at once poetic, nostalgic, and shocking are a profound testament to the Gurkha spirit. Hema Kiruppalini's introduction ably provides the historical context, but the outrage that Gurkhas are repatriated at 45, once their use is expired, is perhaps dampened by a certain sentimentality in the choice of their stories.
